Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart' is a short story that delves into the themes of guilt and paranoia.
The story is narrated by an unnamed protagonist who insists on their sanity despite claiming to be haunted by an old man's 'vulture eye.' Convinced that the eye is evil, the narrator decides to murder the old man to rid themselves of its gaze.
The story begins with the narrator describing their meticulous plan to commit the murder. Over several nights, the narrator sneaks into the old man's room, watching him sleep, but finds the eye closed and therefore cannot commit the act.
On the eighth night, however, the old man awakens and the narrator sees the eye open. Driven by a mix of fear and fury, the narrator kills the old man by suffocating him with his own bed.
Afterwards, the narrator dismembers the body and hides the pieces under the floorboards. When the police arrive, informed by a neighbor who heard the old man's scream, the narrator confidently invites them in and even sits above the concealed corpse.
However, the narrator gradually becomes overwhelmed by a sound they perceive to be the old man's beating heart, growing louder and louder. Consumed by guilt and paranoia, the narrator finally collapses and confesses to the murder, revealing the hidden body to the police.
